Blog Safety

Childnet International have produced some useful blog safety starters and an accompanying leaflet.

Blogging is part of a social and technological revolution that some people are calling Web 2.0. What’s different about it is the ease with which anyone can produce and distribute their own content and link with like minded sites to create a very powerful network for sharing ideas and influence opinion. Young people especially love this new environment because they can have a powerful voice to express their identity and opinions. However there are safety issues to consider for both young users, parents, industry and education.

Also links to Blogsafety.com which contains a range of interesting reading on the subject.

    Hi Peter,

Blog safety of children is of course paramount. I published a post yesterday called ‘The kids are doing it for themselves’. It was about the article MySpace: the final frontier by Yojana Sharma which appears in this week’s TES.

It describes how children are embracing sites such as MySpace and Bebo and communicating with ‘virtual friends’ from around the world. It doesn’t however mention net security particularly.

Since writing my post, I’ve been checking out articles on Bebo and it seems that they fall into two camps. They either say that children should never use these sites or that if they do they must adhere to the sort of advice available in the downloadable leaflet referred to in this post.

Children are clearly using these social networking sites in their thousands. Therefore it seems better to educate them on the possible dangers of using them than being over judgemental. What do you think?

    Best wishes

    Joe

    Dear Peter,
I understand that you probably get lots of emails and are very busy (I couldn’t find an email address so posted here) – but I just thought that I would let you know that I am beginning a class blog this year. I am an assistant headteacher and Year 6 classteacher at Priestsic Primary School in Nottinghamshire – we piloted the ICT Mark for BECTA last year.
I hope to use our blog as a tool to really enhance what happens in my class and just wanted to say the information about BLOG safety you posted will be very important as our fledgling blog, or sprog, as your friend James Farmer puts it, grows throughout the year.
I have many, many ideas for the tool, as well as a Wiki space, and I am looking forward to implementing them and blogging about them at my blog too.
You have helped us so please let me know if there is anything my class and I can do to help you.
    Best wishes
    Tom Barrett

  3. Peter,

I am visiting after reading your piece in the Coming of Age text. Thanks for sharing about the safety issue. It is a very important one.
