Mr. Light’s Blog

Taking a walk outside the edu-blogging echo-chamber from time to time is good for the soul. I took a random blog from the ‘Recently Updated’ list over at EduBlogs and had a flick through it.

Mr. Light’s blog starts with very clear guidelines for what is expected of blogging students and their commenting. He then asks his students what they think of blogging and we can read their evaluative and overwhelmingly postive views on the medium.

The post that stands out even more for me is entitled ‘Instantaneous Speed‘.

So what do you think? Let’s define “instantaneous speed” is speed at a particular point in time. Can you be moving during an “instant”. We said that motion is a change in position. Can you change your position in an instant? If you aren’t moving in an instant, do you stop each “instant”? I want to hear what you think.

It is question that demands deep thinking and his student creatively devour the opportunity to think and evaluate. Read the post and comments to get a flavour of this creative scientifc thought.

It would be interesting to know the groundwork that Mr. Light has put in to engage his students to this degree on the blog. I had never thought about instantaneous speed before. Now I can’t get it out of my head ;-) That is a sign of a good teacher!

Thank you for commenting about my blog. I have just started blogging with my students after ALMOST starting a couple of times over the last two years. I have been delighted with their response. Some kids who don’t speak much in class find their voice through this forum. It also gives them a chance to talk about big (and little) ideas.

My blog doesn’t “start” with my guidelines. They aren’t even mine. The kids came up with the guidelines after we had a discussion (talking in class) about the first couple of blogs and what people were writing. I put their ideas up and also asked for their feedback.

I’ve looked through your links to try to discover who you are. If I remember right, it’s Peter Ford. I assume you teach and present at confreences. Is there an “about me and this blog” page I’m not finding?

Thanks again. Feel free to let the kids know what YOU think about instantaneous speed!\

Thanks for the insight into the blogging process. I’m still formulating my view on instantaneous speed ;-)
